FTP Instructions

Special NOTE:

Before uploading your files using FTP, you must re-name the file that represents your home-page to: index.html (lower case). Users will be unable to automatically view your home page if you don't!

(FTP stands for "file transfer protocol." FTP-software sends files from your computer across the internet and "up" into your website.)

You will most likely be transferring files to your website using FTP software such as Filezilla. If this is not installed on your system, you may download the latest version from Sourceforge.net: Filezilla FTP Client (Open Source GPL) - Free Download.

  1. Connect to SonCom.

  2. Launch your FTP program, such as: WS_FTP.exe

  3. Follow the instructions for the specific FTP program you are using. FTP programs generally have the following fields. (Not all of them need to be filled in).

Profile Name= Your domain name or any short description
Host Name= ftp.soncom.com
Host Type= Auto Detect
User ID= Your assigned user id
Pass Word= Your selected or assigned password
Remote Host Directory= www (Or you may leave blank and change after you connect.)
Local PC directory= (Leave blank. You can change after you connect.)

4.) Your FTP window will allow you to select a file from your hard drive to transfer it across to your website.

5.) Open a browser window to view your uploaded pages.

6.) Visit SiteOwner to register your domain with many of the major serch engines

Two Important tips:

Keep in mind that you typically only need your USER ID and PASSWORD in order to FTP.

While the above information will suffice for most FTP software, you may be using a file transfer program not covered by the above examples.

In such cases, you will get more answers (faster) by reading the "Read-Me" or HELP section of the software your are using, or by going to the FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions) of the site WHOSE SOFTWARE YOU ARE USING.
